Chapter 14

The wrath of Granny Byrne.

It was nearly ten before they stirred from the bed the following morning, having had a somewhat busy night, and then waking again around five for another session of making love which Alana initiated this time. She so rarely had the chance to indulge in such shenanigans, lying in beautifully pressed cotton sheets with her arms wrapped around a beautiful woman, and no need to dress for work, or brave the Victoria line with ten thousand other miserable workaholics.

Today was a real holiday, and she was determined to enjoy it. By the end of the second session she had virtually devoured Steph and thoroughly enjoyed getting her own back for the midnight ravaging she’d had. Then they slept again for a further four hours. It was positively decadent and sybaritic, and gave Alana just the physical boost she needed before she faced the wrath of Granny Byrne.

They enjoyed a coffee together in the room, after Alana had insisted she thoroughly wash out the mugs provided with the kettle on the tray. Steph smiled at her, obviously thinking this was something funny, but Alana said, “Oh, you obviously haven’t seen the TV series ‘Confession of hotel cleaners.’ I’m taking no chances.”

“Just make it hot and black,” groaned Steph. “I think I rather over-did the Guinness last night.”

“You did rather go for it you know. There was no need to keep my dad company pint for pint. He must have the liver of an ox.”

They sat down at the little table and drank their coffee. Steph swallowed a couple of paracetamol tablets along with it, and bit into a sweet cookie from the little packet of shortbread provided on the tray.

“I think if you’re visiting your grandma, you need a strategy for survival. Grannies can be trouble. Mine sadly died before she could meet you, but she may not have been any friendlier to you than yours is to me. Why gay people have to be so scared of their own families, and have to make themselves miserable trying to hide who they are so often, I’ll never understand.”

“Neither do I darling, neither do I. Prejudice is a terrible thing, and we just have to hang in there and fight it. I am all set now for ten rounds with Grandma, don’t worry. She won’t get to me, I promise.”

But when they left the hotel and went back to her Salford home, Alana felt much less confident. When she was a small child she had spent many days in her grandmother’s house, while her mother worked in various low-paid and unfulfilling jobs, and even when there were more children and Alana had started school, she would call in for her tea at least twice a week.

Granny Bridget Byrne had only borne sons, so she concentrated on turning Alana into her idea of Irish womanhood from an early age, teaching her to cook, and sew on buttons, and the importance of cleaning, whether it was oneself, one’s clothes or one’s house.
